Help Us Create Sustainable Livelihood With Agriculture Donations

Help The Enduring is a Fremont, California based non-profit organization that gathers donations to create sustainable developments in the communities of Tanzania. One of the communities we have partnered with includes:

Kighare

Kighare is a small village in Vuje, a rural ward in Northern Tanzania, Kilimanjaro Region, in the Same district. Mvango is the official name for Kighare, and it is at an altitude of 1500 meters.

The people of Kighare belong to different clans that came to this place at different times for various purposes. The Wambugu clan kept animals, so they settled on land suitable for their cattle while other clans were agricultural, so they settled in fertile valleys.

Daily Life in Kighare

Kighare is surrounded by the Chome nature reserve and Mkomazi national park’s game reserve, to which the natives used to improve their meals by hunting and lumbering. This made the main sources of income agriculture and animal husbandry.

  • Agriculture: Residents engaged in mainly small-scale production of coffee and cardamom, which were used as cash crops. Other crops were maize, beans, and bananas.
  • Animal husbandry: Residents kept animals like cows, goats, sheep, and chickens. These animals provided food and income.

Status of Education

With their extra finances, they would send their children to school with the advice and assistance of missionaries like John Walesh (an American priest) who was the first person to open this place by constructing a road from Maore in the 1940s.

During this time, elementary education and basic health facilities became available to the people of Kighare.

The Main Challenges For The Community Are

  • 1 Poor and traditional production: means of production remain almost the same as in the 1940s.
  • 2 Health challenges: Kighare natives encounter health challenges and lifestyle diseases such as hypertension and diabetes. They also face difficulties in diagnosis and treatment because the medical facilities are outdated.
  • 3 Water challenges: the only facility available was built by the local church 30 years ago but with aging pipelines and inadequate seasonal rains, people lack water for drinking and cultivation.
  • 4 Education challenges: from the start, the education offered has been elementary which only includes reading, writing, and counting. Until this day, some members of the community cannot read, write, and count.

Possible Solutions

  • Regarding production, there is a need to implement new methods, which should involve seminars and inventing things like fishing projects, intensive farming, and related projects that could elevate people from the vicious cycle of poverty.
  • Along with building new health facilities, existing ones can be improved by equipping them and employing qualified personnel to improve the quality of health care in the community.
  • There is already an existing water project serving every family or a water point near each family but these need renovation to replace the rotten water pipes and the fittings.
  • Regarding education, we need to build a small school for preschool and primary school students so that every child gets an opportunity to learn to read, write, and speak to prepare themselves for the upper school sections.
  • We also need to provide transportation for all the high school children who have to walk almost three hours a day because Kighare does not have a high school.

Needs and Plans For 2022 And 2023
