Raising the Standard of Education Through School Supply Donations

Help The Enduring is located in Fremont, California. Our non-profit organization collaborated with communities in Tanzania to develop their standard of living through education, medical resources, and more. One of the communities we work with includes:

Ndungu

The word “ndungu” originates from the Pare word “Ndu ngu,” which means “saving.” Originally, people from the Pare Mountains reserved their grain stocks and other crops but later on, the word took on the meaning of a weapon storage area.

Location

Ndungu is located in the district of Same in the Kilimanjaro region, where the weather is warm most of the year. It is bordered by the Pare Mountains in the south, Mkomazi park in the northeast, and the Usambara Mountains in the west.

The area is composed of Kihurio, Karamba, Bendera, and Kalemawe.

The Ndungu residents are people from the mainland, namely Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique, Burundi, Kigoma, Mwanza, and Dodoma, who came to these areas as “factory hands” and sisal workers under Indian rule.

Economy and Development

In the early 1960s, about 80 percent of men were laborers who took on small jobs to supplement their income from farming and working in the sisal region.

The town and its economy continue to advance through various sources and opportunities provided by modern development, including piggery and poultry.

Land and agro-parish are based on the ownership of the land on which critical social institutions such as schools, clinics, and vocational training centers can be built. More effort is invested in rice plantations and other types of agriculture for the benefit of the local people.

Cultural and Social Life

There is an old saying: “He who neglects traditions is a slave.”

The Ndungu people also have traditions and cultural practices where they participate in social events, such as weddings, funerals, and governmental activities. The residents here are from Mainland, Makonde, and Fipa, so cultural values such as generosity, cooperation, and unity are also inculcated in the hearts of believers.

Religions

It is encouraging and comforting to see that in Ndugu, some people follow Islam and Christianity while many people are from Christian denominations all people coexist peacefully within the community.

Education

Ndungu has a history of involvement with education, where they emphasize on ensuring that everyone has the right to education. This gives us confidence that once one has acquired knowledge, they will contribute to their community’s development.

Education awareness began to appear in 1980 through the efforts of Rev. Sabas Msuya, who motivated believers in education. We now have so many children in pre-, primary, and secondary schools and in colleges and vocational training centers.

Communication

Information is crucial to human existence because people need information about their environment, politics, society, government, and health awareness. Communication helps people seek their own development and learn how to use the resources available to them.
